France coach Didier Deschamps has announced his squad for the upcoming 2020 UEFA European Championship qualifiers, but snubbed big names from Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Arsenal.

The 50-year-old, who guided Les Blues to the 2018 FIFA World Cup title, has named his squad for the upcoming clashes with Moldova and Iceland.

France will be keen to change their fortunes after somewhat surprisingly missing out on the semi-finals of the newly-formed UEFA Nations League following a 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands in their final game.

While many big names, such as World Cup winners Lucas Hernandez and Thomas Lemar, were snubbed, Manchester United winger Anthony Martial – who was not in Deschamps’ plans in Russia – made the selection despite his recent injury troubles.

“He has always been part of this French group,” Deschamps said as he explained Martial’s call-up, as quoted by Get French Football News.

“Sometimes he has been taken, sometimes he isn’t. He had some slight fitness concerns, but when he is in full control of his ability in beating players, he has all the attacking qualities required.”

Meanwhile, Barca star Ousmane Dembele missed out after picking up a hamstring injury in his side’s 5-1 win over Olympique Lyon in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

In addition, Manchester City centre-back Aymeric Laporte, who is yet to make his senior debut for Les Bleus, remained overlooked by the France boss, while his teammate, Benjamin Mendy, was not considered fit enough after his long iniury lay-off.
