Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa reveals theory on why fan punched Aston Villa star Jack Grealish | Football | Sport

A fan ran on to the pitch after 10 minutes of the Second City Derby between Birmingham and Villa at St Andrew’s.

He charged at Grealish and punched him in the back of the head.

The man – who was caught and restrained by stewards before being arrested – blew kisses at the crowd with the midfielder still on the ground.

Bielsa, however, says the fan must have issues in his personal life which prompted the assault.

“The person who does the thing we saw yesterday expresses a series of frustrations which are not necessarily linked to football,” he told reporters on Monday.

“Because the more satisfied you are with your personal life, the less you need to do this kind of act.”

Grealish was left unhurt by the shocking encounter.

The playmaker – who was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham last summer – went on to score the winning goal for Villa.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher says that if a serious injury had been sustained from the assault, the referee would have needed to speak to the police before the match could have carried on.

“The player would have to be substituted,” he told Sky Sports.

“The referee’s priority is the safety of the players.

“In that situation, you’d need to speak to the match commander and they would have to be together and establish how the safety of the players is of paramount importance.

“Can you guarantee that’s going to be, if not what are we going to do?

“You need to throw back to the match commander.

“The referee’s job is what’s going on on the pitch. The rest is stewarding and match commanders.

“Between you, you have to come to the right decision.

“In that situation yesterday, you’d have to look at it very seriously if Jack hadn’t been able to continue.”

Speaking after the clash, match commander Superintendent Nick Rowe said: “An attack on a player is completely unacceptable and outrageous.

“The vast majority of people were well behaved but unfortunately the occasion has been marred by this.”
