The reaction as Ireland learn their fate for the EURO 2020 qualifiers

Irish football fans have had their say after the Republic found out who they will face in the qualifiers for Euro 2020.

The draw for the qualifying rounds of the 2020 European football championship were held at the Convention Centre in Dublin this morning.

Mick McCarthy’s men face tricky ties against Nations League finalists Switzerland and Denmark, with Georgia and Gibraltar rounding out Group D.

Switzerland, the current top ranked side in Europe, are the top seed in the group while Ireland will be well aware of the dangers Denmark pose, with the two teams facing each other four times within the past 13 months.

It could have been far worse for McCarthy, however, as Ireland were initially drawn in Group C alongside the Netherlands and Germany, but were moved to Group D due to the UEFA draw rules which stat that no more than two host national sides could be placed in the same group.

The qualifying campaign will get underway with two matches in March, before another two fixtures are arranged for early June, following the end of most European domestic seasons.

There has been a varied reaction to the group from Irish fans, with some fans feeling that we’ve been handed a handy route to the finals while others are more doubtful of our chances of getting out of the group.
