Man Utd icon Paul Scholes in stunning Zinedine Zidane call with Jose Mourinho on brink | Football | Sport

United could only manage an underwhelming 2-2 draw with Southampton on Saturday.

Saints were 2-0 up against United after just 20 minutes.

Mourinho’s men came back to rescue a point from the south coast, but it was an abject display from the heavyweights.

The Portuguese now looks on the brink and Zidane, having guided Real Madrid to another Champions League triumph last season before resigning, has been tipped to replace.

Scholes, however, isn’t convinced Zidane is the answer.

He said on BT Sport: “Is Zidane the right man though?

“He went in to Real Madrid who had a group of ready made winners already.

“This is a totally different job he would have to be rebuild confidence with a squad that isn’t quite performing.

“He went to Real Madrid with so many great players, it was still difficult but, this would be a whole rebuilding job.”

United face Arsenal at Old Trafford tonight.

Alan Tonge – who was one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s first signings before being forced to retire aged just 24 – reckons Mourinho has lost the dressing room.

“I don’t think they don’t want to play for him,” he told LoveSport Radio.

“I wouldn’t like to think that at a club of United’s stature. It’s not correct.

“The injury problems will open up opportunities for other players and it’s up to these other players to try and stand up and be counted, like McTominay and a couple of fringe players who will get run-outs tonight.

“It’s up to them to grasp the nettle and crack on.

“It’s not been a great start to the season at all and it comes down to the pre-season for me.

“This is where all these problems started with the lack of transfer activity.

“I think that’s the source of all these problems.”

ESPN claim the club are still reluctant to axe the 55-year-old with Manchester United still in the Champions League.

United would also reportedly prefer to sack him at the end of the season in a bid to save some cash.
