That is the opinion of former Wolves, Burnley and Scotland striker Chris Iwelumo.
Terry has been linked with a return to Aston Villa to solve their defensive woes.
The Chelsea legend left Villa Park at the end of last season, with the club in serious financial strife.
However, new majority owners have steadied the ship and meant the likes of Jack Grealish did not have to be sold.
Terry is without a club and can be signed outside the window as a free agent.
And Iwelumo says re-signing the former England captain would be a no brainer for Steve Bruce.
“What he brings in the dressing room alone, the presence, the professionalism, the organisation, the communication,” he said on talkSPORT 2.
“Everything that he does makes Aston Villa’s squad a stronger squad.
“What he’s achieved as a player, straight away he goes in and the dressing room lifts.
“You must understand. You’re saying it’s a step back, I disagree.
“It’s another experienced head that has been there and done it.
“He will have to get up to speed, but what he brings in being ahead mentally as well, he sees the game, he plays the game, he’s doing his coaching as well.
“What he brings is a voice, is a leader, it’s needed in every dressing room.”
Terry made 36 appearances for Villa in all competitions in his only season at the club, scoring one goal.
He captained the side that lost the Championship play-off final to Fulham in May.
Villa currently sit 12th in the table, winning just two of their opening six games of the season.
